Happy New Year, everyone! 🎉
You started the year off right by making a list of New Year’s resolutions you plan to stick to. At first, everything may feel exciting and doable—but as the days go by, that New Year’s momentum can fade. Eventually, you might find yourself not doing any of the resolutions you set—and maybe even feeling frustrated with yourself.
We’ve all been there. Losing momentum is common, so don’t beat yourself up! You just need a little guidance to keep the drive going throughout the year—not just in January.
Why is it so hard to stick to resolutions?
One big reason is resolution overload. We often start with a list that’s too large to tackle all at once. Habits form when we repeat something consistently. Once a habit is formed, it feels natural—less like work and more like part of your daily routine.
But you can’t form 10–20 new habits all at once. Trying to do too much at once sets you up for burnout and disappointment.
How do I stick to resolutions?
The best approach is to remember that you have 365 days to achieve your goals. Every small change is a step in the right direction.
Start by organizing your list. You can sort it:
- By importance: Most important to least important. Start with the goal that matters most to you.
- By ease: If you know you tend to give up easily, organize your list from easiest to hardest. Starting with small, simple goals builds confidence and momentum, making it easier to tackle bigger goals later.
Once your list is organized, pick only one or two goals to focus on at a time. The size of the goal and your own commitment level will guide this—everyone’s willpower and pace are different, and that’s okay!
Make your goals small and attainable. The best way to stay motivated is to actually accomplish something. Once you achieve a goal—or even part of it—you’ll feel proud, inspired, and ready to keep going.
Stay focused and motivated
Don’t get overwhelmed by the big picture. Remember, you have a full year to work toward your goals. Change doesn’t happen overnight, and it’s perfectly normal to get off track.
When momentum slips, remind yourself:
- Tomorrow is always a new day.
- Focus on what you can do, not what you haven’t done.
- Even thinking about your goal or organizing your list is progress!
The best time to start is now—or any time that works for you. It doesn’t have to be January 1. Monday, Sunday, February 1—any day is a good day to take a step toward your goals.
Your resolution game plan
- Commit: Giving up is NOT an option.
- Use your 365 days wisely: Achieve as much as you can this year.
- Organize your list: From easiest to hardest if you tend to give up easily, or most important to least.
- Start small: Focus on one or two goals at a time.
- Restart if needed: It’s okay to get off track—just start again.
- Celebrate progress: Even small wins count, like making your list or taking your first step.
- Enjoy the process: You’re making changes to enjoy your life more, not less.
